The Kuraoka family, January 2020
Us, January 19, 2020: John, Leo, Shadow, Roy, Ondine

Saturday, March 28, 2020

It's our anniversary! It's been 22 years since that stormy, wet Saturday when we were married in Balboa Park. We had an evocative thunderstorm a couple nights ago, with more rain expected this weekend. As for celebrations, we'll probably make a batch of lentil curry at home and watch a movie.

In coronavirus news, the U.S. now has over 100,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, surpassing China, and San Diego county had its sixth death from the disease. The hospital ship USNS Mercy, which is homeported here in San Diego, was dispatched to Los Angeles to assist with non-coronavirus intensive care cases, freeing area hospitals to pivot to coronavirus care. President Trump signed into law a bipartisan $2.2 trillion bill designed to support hospitals and local governments, keep employers afloat, stave off worse economic damage, and enable laid-off or idled American workers to keep a roof over their heads and food on their tables. The forecast calls for cases to peak in the next few weeks, a grim thought.

Here we're pretty much housebound 24/7. Roy and Leo went to the grocery store the other day, and Roy went to Danielle's house to have dinner with her family yesterday. Other than that, our trips outside have been limited to walking the dog. Leo sometimes takes Shadow for a walk during the day, and we take him at night.

Spring break officially started for Leo, even though he's been out of school for two weeks now. Online school is planned to start up in early April though. And his plan to secure student housing for the start of the fall semester is on hold, which puts the start of school on hold.

Roy would have been traveling back to Colorado Springs this weekend, but he'll be doing his classes online from now until the fall semester. Fortunately, he heard that the housing/meal plan costs will be prorated somehow, and he says students with on-campus employment, which includes him, will continue to be paid, although he's not sure how that will actually work.

Ondine has been working from home for the past two weeks. She's very happy to be able to stay productive in this time!

John has been fighting a cold for the past couple days. Hope it's not COVID-19! Staying six feet away from him will put a damper on our anniversary celebrations for sure. Ha!

John discovered opera via the Metropolitan Opera's daily streams. He watched Wagner's Die Walkurie, and, lost himself in it for nearly five hours. He also watched Siegfried, and plans to watch Gotterdammerung today. An opera fan is born!

Life is just gravy for the dog, though, who is happy to score two walks a day and have the whole pack together all the time.

We have no idea what neighborhood gas prices are, since we haven't been out in over a week and haven't needed gas in even longer. But the stock market closed Friday over 21,600.
