The Kuraoka family, May 2020
Us, May 10, 2020: Roy, John, Leo, Shadow, Ondine

Tuesday, May 12, 2020

Hey, the weather turned nice, just a touch of May Gray coming in over the last few days which dropped the daytime temperatures to the low to mid 80s with a light breeze. The early mornings have been coolish and grayish, turning sunny and clear by late morning.

MOTHER'S DAY was Sunday! We celebrated by getting together next door with Barbara (although John didn't stay; he was feeling like he was fighting a cold). We also took our new family portrait!

Afterwards, we ordered two large pizzas from Mountain Mike's for dinner, a veggie and a combo with sausage, pineapple, and jalapenos. Yum! That combo is a new family favorite, by the way. And that was dinner for two days!

Coronavirus update: The Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Tracker shows that COVID-19 has been confirmed in over 4.2 million people worldwide, and has claimed over 290,800 lives. That's an increase of over 300,000 cases and 14,000 lives lost in the past four days. The U.S. has over 1,359,300 confirmed cases with over 82,100 deaths, up over 61,300 cases and another 4,100 deaths in the past four days. In San Diego, our local toll rose to 5,065 cases with 175 deaths.

Some disease historians suggest this COVID-19 pandemic is the first ever to spread initially from the rich to the poor, highlighting the role of global travel in distributing disease as well as wealth and knowledge. Like most diseases, though, everywhere it went it affected the poor disproportionately more than the wealthy.

Leo weedwhacked the back yard pavers over the weekend. John showed him how to respool the string, which Leo had to do a couple times during the job. His fall school plans are again up in the air until he hears back from Point Blank as to whether they will have on-campus classes; if they go online-only he thinks he'd rather postpone attending and come up with an alternate plan for summer and fall.

Roy has finals this week! Monday morning he had one final exam that started at 5 am (6 am Colorado time) and another in the evening, and today he has two more. Unlike some universities and colleges around the world, UCCS did not implement a pass/fail-only, no-detriment, or hold-harmless policy for this semester's grading. So all his online work counts in full, and affect his final grades. He'll be returning to the UCCS campus in August.

Ondine is making a final read-through of her novel before sending it to a sensitivity reader. She's also researching agents and publishers. She's working on her synopsis now, itself a major task.

Her rowing machine arrived yesterday, and this morning John put it together! It's an Echanfit CRW4901 Magnetic Rowing Machine ordered from Amazon, and it may be even more exciting than the new blender from last week! The rower seems very solidly designed, and because it uses magnetic resistance it works very smoothly and quietly. It's in the front room, the idea being to use it while watching TV, so quietness is key.

John hit 18.5 miles in a single one-hour session on his exercise bike, a personal best. This is the last week of the online forensic archaeology course he's taking. He enjoyed it enough that he's thinking of starting the certificate program in archaeology at City College just to have a short-term goal while he investigates GRE prep stuff. He's pretty much over his cold, it was a quick one.

Neighborhood gas prices are about $2.99 per gallon. The stock market is currently around 23,764.
