Us, May 10, 2020: Roy, John, Leo, Shadow, Ondine

Saturday, June 13, 2020

School is out for the summer! Yeah, it's been out since March. But now it's official, and Leo is a high school graduate, although he doesn't have his diploma; that'll be mailed to him. He won't have a fancy fake leather cover for it, because he chose to skip the drive-through graduation car parade at which those were handed out. For the same reason, he has no cap-and-gown photos. His class had no grad night, no end-of-school parties, no going around getting friends and favorite teachers to sign yearbooks, no graduation ceremony.

Still, Leo's graduated Patrick Henry high school, and will be starting at Point Blank Music School in the January term.

We celebrated Saturday afternoon at Barbara's with take out from Leo's new favorite ramen place, Tsuki Sushi on Lake Murray Blvd, across the street from Ross. He and Ondine got the spicy tonkatsu ramen, Roy got the regular tonkatsu ramen, John got tofu yakisoba and salad, and Barbara got a chicken teriyaki bowl. Plus, we added chicken fried rice, gyoza, and spicy tuna roll. Yum, what a feast!

John got gas for his car for the first time since March 13. It was just a top-off, since he hasn't been driving around much. Just two trips to the grocery stores a week, and that's about it. But, since he doesn't shop the sales as aggressively, to avoid making multiple stops, we're probably spending more on groceries overall. Well, that plus there have been four of us here 24/7 for months now, and that requires a fair amount of food.

Coronavirus update: Another milestone passed: two million cases in the U.S., an infection rate most politicians and many social commentators insisted would never happen despite ample warnings from the scientific and medical community. The Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Tracker shows that COVID-19 has been confirmed in over 7,763,900 people worldwide, and has claimed over 429,600 lives. That's over 578,400 more cases and over 20,700 more deaths since Tuesday. The U.S. now has over 2,073,600 confirmed cases and over 115,300 deaths, up over 99,800 cases and another 6,600 deaths since Tuesday. In San Diego, our local toll rose to 9,130 cases with 313 deaths.

Infection rates seem to be increasing as things open up, so a second surge is looking increasingly threatening. Speaking of things opening up, Cowles Mountain reopened this week, so now the street is jammed with cars again, sigh. It was so nice while it lasted!

Leo continues to work through a four-week music production course with producer Andrew Huang. He went to Grossmont Center to hang out with his friend Taylan; except for the face masks it was business as usual there at the mall.

Roy says he'll be starting the Profession Project Management certification course soon, but so far hasn't.

Ondine received excellent feedback on her novel from the sensitivity reader, who had some terrific guidance and resources! So she has another push to get it ready to send out. She took a walk with Lucy one evening; it's always great to connect! And, she continues to get groceries once a week for one of our neighbors.

John has been clearing out 35 years of advertising debris, including packing away awards and portfolio materials, recycling or shredding old papers, and actually throwing away his old textbooks. He's also packed up a shelf of business books to give away. He's reorganizing his office to be better for taking online classes now that he's set a new goal. Monday he starts a Cultural Anthropology class at City College. And, he's still learning Latin through Duolingo. Here's an example sentence: Psittacus ebrius carmen scribit. "The drunk parrot writes the song." Oooo.

Neighborhood gas prices are about $3.19 per gallon. The stock market closed Friday at 25,605.54.
