Us, August 22, 2020: Leo, John, Ondine, Roy, Shadow
Well, it's been another busy week in which not much noteworthy got accomplished beyond work, school, and wading through another election season. The first presidential debate last week was a travesty, minutes of incoherent bickering from both sides that left nothing substantive said about any of the issues on the table.
The weather has been hot recently, with temperatures over 100 degrees for the past seven or eight days. Fortunately, things are starting to cool off a bit as we enter fall.
Leo started a Masterclass on music production, but we're not sure how much of it he's doing as he seems to be mostly playing online games with friends all day and night. He got together with Taylan for pizza last week, and earlier this week connected with Jorge one evening.
Roy was nominated by his manager at the Ent Center for a UCCS leadership program! Apparently there's one nominee per campus job, so it's no small honor to be selected. Meanwhile, his work and classes are just humming along; he has some midterms coming up.
Ondine started doing the Write-ober challenge, so follow her Instagram account for daily mini stories written in response to a common prompt.
John is cruising along in his classes at City College. His textbooks arrived one after another for a class on California Indians which starts next week. Follow his journey on Instagram here.
We have a weekend getaway to Coronado, just the two of us, thanks to Barbara, who has a timeshare. She decided not to use any part of her free week there, so we're picking up a weekend away! Woo hoo!
President Trump and first lady Melania tested positive for COVID-19, followed quickly by several other high-level White House officials and operatives. Trump was immediately sequestered for a few days at Walter Reed Hospital where he allegedly received some experimental treatments. He rebounded almost immediately with no real impact on anything. The San Diego Padres lost their first playoff game against the Dodgers. And, we received our mail-in ballots for the general election.
In coronavirus news, the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Tracker shows that COVID-19 has been confirmed in over 35,987,300 people worldwide, and has claimed over 1,052,200 lives. That's over 2,430,200 more cases and over 45,800 more deaths since last Tuesday. The U.S. now has over 7,538,500 confirmed cases and over 211,500 deaths, up over 349,800 cases and another 5,600 deaths since last Tuesday. In San Diego, our local toll rose to 48,823 cases with 806 deaths.
Neighborhood gas prices dipped to $3.19 per gallon, but bounced back up to $3.29.
